Guide nominated for community award
Philippa was in the newspaper!!! The article reads:
"A dedicated Dogsthorpe guide has been nominated for a top award in recognition of her work as a role model in the community.
Sixteen-year-old Phillipa Gardener of Lawn Avenue has been nominated for a Young People of the Year (YOPEY) award in Cambridgeshire which recognises and rewards young people.   A top prize of £1,000 is up for grabs for the winner.
Phillipa was nominated for the award by Tracy Foster, division commissioner of Peterborough North East Guides.   Tracy says Phillipa was so quiet and shy when she joined the Rainbows at the age of five that her guider wondered whether she would stay.
She did and has remained with the unit she started her guiding in at All Saints Road and helps out each week with the rainbows and brownies, planning activities and running games and craft sessions.
She is also an active member of the Brookwide senior section at Brookside Methodist Church on Gunthorpe Road.
Guiding has given Phillipa many opportunities, a highlight of which will be attending the World Scout Jamboree in Essex in July that will coincide with the centenary of the scout movement.
Phillipa runs and maintains the Cambridgeshire guides website and has set up separate sites for the senior section and the county World Scout Jamboree group, for which she is also organising events.
She set up a special day to do an environmental project at Flag Fen where she helps as a volunteer doing maintenance and conservation work.
"I like to be able to do something in a practical way to give something back to the community," said Phillipa.   "You can see what you have achieved."
Speaking about guiding, Phillipa said: "It's a chance to do so many activities that you would not be able to do otherwise and it's great fun, adding that it helped build self-esteem and confidence."
As part of a gap year before going to university to study archaeology, Phillipa is set to go to Ghana in the autumn where she will help put up a community building in a local village and teach in a school.
"It will be an amazing experience and lots of fun," said Phillipa, who is raising the £2,000 for the trip by doing events such as a sponsored night hike in fancy dress.
She is also a youth voice volunteer with Unicef in a trial project to get young people to spread the word about its work.
Jan Telensky, chief executive of Cambs YOPEY sponsor SkillsTrain, said 'We want to hear about more young people who give to others and develop themselves at the same time like Phillpa.'"
